Feedback like this makes it all worthwhile

We're doing the web design, development, copy and information architecture for a very, VERY cool Web 2.0 tool. We can't tell you what it is yet (so stay tuned for that), but we can tell you we submitted the first draft of the home page copy and design (combined) today, and our client was extremely impressed. Of course, we knew he would be, but still it's always nice to hear positive feedback. And his was amazingly positive. This is what he emailed us (honestly!):
I woke up this morning and I prepared for a usual day at the office. My eyes fought to stay awake as I opened my laptop to read the morning news. Then I saw your e-mail. I got nervous and knew this was the moment I had been waiting for. And then, when I saw what you had sent, my head, my body, my nerves woke up simultaneously. I suddenly felt like the design I had come to discover. Fresh, natural and elegant. It was the morning I woke up to the great words and art of Silver Pistol.

Bill Slawski answers: Does Google really use VIPS to sort the signal from the noise?
For a while now, SEOs in the know have hypothesized that search engines use Vision-based Page Segmentation (VIPS) to learn what parts of a page they should pay attention to. (Daily SEO Tips has a nice intro to VIPS here…)

Are you communicating with your visitors? Or just preaching?
The trouble with websites is they’re mostly one-way. A sermon, not a conversation.
That’s not how effective persuasion works in the ‘real world’. You wouldn’t launch straight into a sales spiel, in face-to-face conversation with a prospect. There’d be to-ing and fro-ing. Laughter, sharing and meaningful pauses. Courtesy and social maxims to observe. You’d give your prospect time to digest what you’re saying, and you’d help her if you saw her struggling with something.

How disco, social media and my ex-wife saved the Easter Bunny
What a bizarre 24 hours I’ve just had. The strange headline above is actually not a metaphor, it’s 100% true. In fact, the headline would be more accurate if it read, ‘How disco, Chinese food, social media, Microsoft Word, my ex-wife and a hug from the principal saved the Easter Bunny’.

Corporate web copy needs more bikini models: Long-form copy & why you should be using it
We all hate long-form copy
We all hate reading that American-sales-letter-style long-form copy. (Even you American copywriters. C’mon, admit it!)
